Pediatric Nurse Practitioner BSN-DNP Programs

A BSN-to-DNP Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) program lets registered nurses with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing earn a Doctor of Nursing Practice and prepare for PNP certification in one continuous program. The DNP is the highest practice-focused nursing degree.

BSN-to-DNP is the most common level for acute care and dual primary/acute care PNP tracks. It takes longer and costs more than a BSN-to-MSN program, but you finish with the doctorate instead of returning for it later.

How BSN-to-DNP PNP Programs Work

Most programs combine three components into one plan of study.

  • Graduate core: Advanced pathophysiology, advanced pharmacology, and advanced health assessment, plus research and evidence-based practice.
  • PNP specialty and clinicals: Pediatric diagnosis and management courses with supervised clinical hours in your population focus. PNCB requires at least 500 supervised hours for certification eligibility.
  • Doctoral coursework and DNP project: Leadership, quality improvement, health policy, and a practice-based DNP project. Programs follow the AACN standard of at least 1,000 supervised practice hours after the bachelor’s degree.

Some programs award an MSN partway through. Others award only the DNP at the end. Ask before you enroll, because an MSN awarded midway can let you sit for certification and start practicing sooner.

Primary Care, Acute Care, or Dual

The population focus decides which certification exam you can take and where you can practice.

  • Primary care (CPNP-PC): Well-child care, acute minor illness, and chronic condition management in clinics and practices.
  • Acute care (CPNP-AC): Hospitalized, critically ill, and medically complex children. Programs often require acute care pediatric RN experience before or during the program.
  • Dual PC/AC: Preparation for both exams. Expect more credits, more clinical hours, and a longer timeline than a single-population track.

Not every school on this list offers every population at the BSN-to-DNP level. See our primary care, acute care, and dual care program lists to compare by population.

Typical Admission Requirements

Requirements vary by school. Expect most of the following:

  • BSN from an accredited program
  • Active, unencumbered RN license (some schools require licensure in a specific state)
  • Minimum GPA, commonly around 3.0
  • RN work experience; pediatric experience is often preferred, and acute care tracks may require it
  • Resume, references, and a goal statement
  • An interview at many programs

Cost Considerations

  • Most credits of any PNP pathway: Doctoral coursework and the DNP project add credits and terms beyond a BSN-to-MSN program.
  • Delayed earnings: If no MSN is awarded midway, you cannot practice as a PNP until you finish the full program.
  • Project timeline risk: A delayed DNP project can add terms and tuition.
  • Fees and travel: Technology, clinical, and program fees add to tuition. “Mostly Online” and “Hybrid” programs include campus visits you will need to budget for.
  • Employer support: Hospitals, especially children’s hospitals, often offer tuition reimbursement to RNs pursuing advanced practice.

BSN-to-DNP vs. BSN-to-MSN

Both lead to the same PNCB certification exams and the same scope of practice. The difference is the degree, the time, and the cost.

  • Choose BSN-to-DNP if: You want leadership, faculty, or quality improvement roles, or want the doctorate without a second admission later.
  • Choose BSN-to-MSN if: Your goal is clinical practice as quickly and affordably as possible. You can still add a DNP later through an MSN-to-DNP program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a DNP change what I can do as a PNP?

No. Scope of practice comes from your certification and state licensure. A DNP can open leadership, faculty, and quality improvement roles.

Can I complete a BSN-to-DNP PNP program online?

Many programs deliver coursework online. Clinical hours are completed in person, usually near where you live. Many programs also require campus intensives, especially for acute care skills.

Can I work while enrolled?

Many students work part time, and many programs offer part-time plans. Clinical rotations become harder to balance with full-time work in the later terms.

Which certification exam will I take?

Primary care graduates take the PNCB CPNP-PC exam. Acute care graduates take the PNCB CPNP-AC exam. Dual-track graduates are eligible for both.

How long does a BSN-to-DNP PNP program take?

Length depends on the population track and on full- or part-time enrollment. Expect longer than a BSN-to-MSN program because of the doctoral coursework and DNP project.
